For curiosity's sake, I searched Stephen Harper, and it turns out he has facebook too.

haha, that's amazing! The politics of facebook.
I guess you can say this phenomenon is indicative of politicians' desire to appear "hip" and "cool" in the eyes of potential, young voters. That's why we saw the American presidential candidates set up profiles on mySpace. It's weird, disturbing, and bit creepy, but they truly believe it works; and maybe it does.
