Dion: The target of Conservative attack ads.
Today on TV I saw a new commerical attacking Stephen Dion -- an ad obviously funded by the Conservative Party of Canada. It depicted Dion in the Liberal Leader Debate responding to an attack by Ignatieff saying "that's unfair...that's unfair.... do you know how hard it is to make priorities"?
Personally, even though I'm a die-hard Liberal, I will admit that those aren't the words that I want the leader of my country to use. I thought that this ad was an effective attack because it wasn't personal and it wasn't vindictive. The conversation used in the commerical came directly from the mouth of Dion, and as such it is hard to refute. Clearly, when watching the commercial it is hard to grasp the context but as a viewer it is hard to sympathize with Dion.
I think this is a good example of a negative/attack ad what do you guys think???

I agree, while these words may have come directly from Dion there's a lot to eb said for framing. A choice was made to include only this section of the event. Not the dialogue surrounding it. Not another statement by Dion. Clearly a lot can be done through contextualizing what someone says or does.
I think if you take the time to see what Dion was saying his response was quite honest and open. It is nearly impossible for a minister or caucus member to make the priorities of the day. That is the leader's duty. Now that Dion is leader he CAN set the priorities for party policy.
Generally I don't think attack ads are that effective. I'm surprised to see them so early in the game. I mean, an election is supposedly not coming soon (as far we we know it, and how our politicians keep denying one is). I find attack ads, especially the ones used, to have little merit, especially to an intelligent and well informed mind. Those ads took things Dion said out of context. They were redundant and showed little of bad things Dion has been responsible for, it merely attacked the Liberal party in general. Positive ads are way more effective as they highlight and perhaps introduce positive action that the public may not be aware of. The only thing those attack ads did for was question why they were put out there in the first place. Why is Harper scared?
I agree with you to a certain degree. It might have been a better attack-ad tactic, but I think that the Liberals can use ENOUGHHHHHHHH Harper ads that would make him look like the devil (especially that letter that was leaked by the Liberal party). Dion has not been in power, and I think he should be given a chance to prove himself (give him the benefit of the doubt). I much rather have Dion in power than Harper (not a fan of him at alllll) I would actually rather see a chimpanzee in power than Harper, the chimp would probably do a better job at running this country then that puppet we call Harper. Our country would be in trouble if we had a majority Conservative government in power. Ok, I'm getting off topic, but I just think that those attack ads are a cheap way at slandering a Liberal because Conservatives know they're in trouble now that Dion is the leader of the Liberal party. I also agree with ABC123 that Dion was just making an honest response too. Because lets face it, it is hard choosing which issues for priority and what not, and trying to satisfy the majority. There are countless issues that could be on the table, so to prioritize them is just a huge job in itself. Therefore, that attack ad would not sway my vote, if anything make me wanna vote for Liberal more and get the minority conservative government OUT OF THEREEEE!
