Just when we thought the Belinda coverage was dying down...

Here's an excerpt from today's globe and mail online:
"While the government was being peppered with questions about the new Clean Air
Plan, Holland says a Liberal jokingly asked Mr. MacKay about the impact of pollution
on humans and animals: "What about your dog?"
According to Holland, Mr. MacKay motioned toward Ms. Stronach's vacant seat and
replied: "You already have her.""

Is it still a mystery why more women aren't in Canadian politics?

I think that Belinda's attempt to turn the comment into a signification of the conservative givernments disdain for women is outrageous. It's ridiculous for her to take the comment completely out fo context (i.e. he is her former boyfriend) and use it as an indicator of a serious policy trend on the part of the conservatives.
Furthermore, if Belinda and other female politicians desire female equality they should treat the comment as an almost a good thing. If men are able to throw rude comments back and forth at each other in the house and write it off as a part of debate then women should consider such derogatory comments as equalizers: they need to play on the same level as men if they want to be recognized as equals. In my opinion special treatment is seen as a distinguisher between the sexes that deepens the differences between them in a negative, or backwards way.

I agree with Jazzyj to some extent. There is so much criticism and hostilities in politics and we see it everyday through campaigns, debates, interviews etc. However, I think the criticism should not reflect one's personal/sex lfe.

One a side note to that, the LFP daily poll asked if MacKay should resign for allegedly calling Belinda a "dog." 76% of respondants said no.
